How it is built
A block drive is a system, and each layer matters:
- Dig out to the depth the ground needs, usually more on soft or clay soils.
- Sub-base: crushed stone laid and compacted in layers.
- Edge restraints: kerbs or blocks set in concrete so the paving cannot creep.
- Laying course: a screeded bed of sharp sand.
- Blocks, cut neatly at the edges, then vibrated in with kiln-dried jointing sand.
Most of the failures you see on older drives, such as dips, ruts and loose edges, come back to a thin sub-base or edges that were never properly restrained.
Patterns
| Pattern | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Herringbone (45° or 90°) | Drives | Locks together and resists turning tyres |
| Stretcher bond | Paths, small drives | Neat, but weaker under turning cars |
| Basketweave | Patios | Decorative; not ideal under vehicles |
Costs
| Item | Typical UK cost |
|---|---|
| New block paving drive | about £100 per m² |
| 35m² drive | about £3,500 |
| Re-laying a sunken area | priced on survey |

Billingham drives that have sunk
Many drives on Billingham estates laid in the 1980s and 1990s are now showing their age: tyre ruts in the parking spot, a dip by the gate, or weeds in every joint. Because blocks can be lifted, the sunken part can often be taken up, the base rebuilt and the same blocks relaid, which keeps the colour matched. Where the whole base has failed, starting again is usually better value.
Matching the house
Brindle and red blends suit the red brick of the company-era semis around Mill Lane and Roseberry. Charcoal and silver tones suit render and the buff brick of newer homes in High Grange. A contrasting border makes a small frontage look tidier.
Permeable block paving
Permeable blocks have wider joints filled with fine grit, and sit on an open-graded base that stores water and lets it soak away. They meet the front-garden drainage rules without extra channels. See our drainage guide.
Common questions
How long does block paving last?
With a good sub-base, 20 years or more. The blocks themselves often outlast the drive and can be reused.
Do I need planning permission?
Not if the blocks are permeable or the water drains into your garden. Otherwise, a front surface over 5m² needs permission.
Why do weeds grow in the joints?
Seeds land in the jointing sand. Topping up the sand and brushing regularly helps, and a joint stabiliser reduces it further.
Can you extend my existing block drive?
Usually, if matching blocks are still made. Older colours can fade, so a contrasting border can disguise the join.
